Dear TSCS Families,
We hope all of you are doing well and staying healthy in the midst of this public health crisis. We continue to miss all of you and look forward to the day when we can see each other at school. In the meantime, we have several updates/reminders.
First, please be sure to like/follow us on Facebook and Twitter and continue to check Shelby County Schools’ website for important COVID-19 updates.
Extended School Closure
As I am sure you know, we will now be out of school until further notice. We follow Shelby County Schools’ emergency closures. Their latest update is below.
UPDATE (3/24/20): Following the Governor Bill Lee’s request today for all Tennessee school districts to close through April 24, Superintendent Ray has announced that all SCS schools and district offices will remain closed until further notice. We understand this request is aimed to protect our community. Thankfully, we have plans in place to continue providing meals to students daily in partnership with the YMCA, and we are already expanding our instructional resources that are available for students while schools are closed. We will be providing further updates later this week and ongoing regarding services that will be available during the extended closure. We will of course continue to consult with our Board, as well as local health officials and local and state leaders, as we make decisions. Be assured, the health and safety of our students, staff and families will always be our top priority.
Distance Learning (Introduction) You will recall that before Spring Break on March 12, we sent home (and emailed) academic packets to families for March 23-27 (this week) when we thought that we would be out of school until Monday, March 30. Now that the length of our closure has been extended a couple of times, we have been planning and working to launch distance learning, which will begin next week.
You and your children will receive outreaches from your child(ren)’s teachers detailing what your child can expect next week and the following weeks. Our goal is to offer multiple learning opportunities online per subject each week. If any of your contact information (phone numbers, address, and/or email address) has changed recently please reach out to Ms. Sheba Coleman at email@example.com.
Please note that all 6-12 distance learning will take place via Google Classroom, so it is important for students to check their TSCS email regularly for assignments and announcements from their teachers.
While we are uncertain of our return date at this time, our distance learning plan is in its trial phase. We will certainly need to make adjustments as needed to ensure this plan is as beneficial as possible. Please feel free to reach out with any clarifying questions. We are happy to help!
You will not receive report cards for Quarter 3 yet. We are awaiting district and state guidance and will follow up in this area as soon as possible.

PBS Offering through the State Department of Education
We are thrilled to announce we have a new partnership with the state’s PBS stations to deliver daily instructional content for Tennessee students.
Starting April 6, the six stations— WNPT Nashville, East Tennessee PBS, WCTE Upper Cumberland, WKNO Memphis, West TN PBS, and Chattanooga WTCI— will deliver two hours of programming with high-quality instructional content from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. CST. Four hours of content will also be streamed overnight, which viewers can watch live or record.
This is an incredible example of Tennesseans coming together to support kids. Families and students are hungry for content right now, and we are grateful our local stations have stepped up to help fill this need. Read more here.

Shelby County Schools Additional Resources
Looking for even more learning opportunities (on top of our distance learning plan)? Shelby County Schools has some additional resources on their website: https://www.scsk12.org/instructionalresources/index#/
UPDATE (3/22/20): Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of support from local and state elected officials, as well as community organizations and businesses, thousands of students will be able to receive FREE meals every day while schools are closed. Beginning Monday, March 23, the YMCA will be taking over meal distribution at all sites previously designated for SCS meals. The YMCA is providing all of the food and coordinating distribution with its own staff members. The YMCA is a valued partner, and the District is extremely appreciative for this support in such a time of urgent need. As originally planned, meals will be available M-F while schools are closed (through April 3), 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., for all children 18 and under. The child must be present to receive a meal. Additionally, the Mid-South Food Bank is making meals available for students at all of its mobile food pantries in the Memphis area, and several businesses are providing FREE or discounted student meals. View all meal pickup sites and details here.
ADDITIONAL FOOD RESOURCES
We wanted to make sure that you saw this and also make you aware of an additional distribution site very close to The Soulsville Charter School.
Memphis Delta Prep charter school (1237 College Street) will have meals available this week and they have no connection to Shelby County Schools’ Central Nutrition Center of food distribution. Please feel free to drive thru there. Additional information is below:
